The Vibration Meter app, also known as a seismograph or seismometer, is a professional tool for measuring the strength of vibrations, earthquakes, and seismic activity. It accurately detects and records seismic waves generated by various sources such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and avalanches.
Utilizing the accelerometer in your mobile phone, this app provides precise detection and analysis of vibrations. The recorded data is displayed on a graph, presenting the ground motion or object movement over time in three Cartesian axes. The z-axis represents the vertical motion perpendicular to the Earth's surface, while the x and y axes represent the horizontal motion parallel to the surface.
One notable feature of this app is its use of the Instrumental Intensity Scale developed by The United States Geological Survey. This scale maps peak ground acceleration and peak ground velocity onto an intensity scale similar to the well-known Mercalli Scale. Seismologists around the world use this scale to create shake maps based on these values.
The Mercalli Intensity Scale categorizes vibrations and impact damage into twelve levels:
- Instrumental - Not felt, only recorded by seismographs
- Weak - Felt on top floors of high buildings
- Slight - Felt indoors, similar to a passing light truck
- Moderate - Rattling windows and doors, like a passing train
- Rather Strong - Felt by everyone, causing small objects to be upset
- Strong - Books falling off shelves, trees shaking, and causing damage
- Very Strong - Difficult to stand, buildings damaged
- Destructive - Significant damage with broken trees
- Violent - General panic, serious damage, and cracks
- Intense - Most buildings destroyed, rails bent
- Extreme - Rails greatly bent, pipelines destroyed
- Catastrophic - Near total damage
This app not only allows you to measure and monitor all vibrations and shocks using your smartphone or tablet, but also provides the option to share your measurement results with other users. It is a highly convenient and reliable tool for those who require professional-grade measurements of vibrations and seismic activity.
